Misson Trip

From late December '08 to early January '09 I volunteered at an Ashram called the Gedong Gandhi Ashram based in Candidasa, Bali, Indonesia.  Whilst there I was vegetarian - something I never thought possible! - and lived by the Gandhian ideals  of ahimsa (nonviolence), satya (truth), karuna (compassion and by extension, universal brotherhood) and swadeshi (self-sufficiency) and offered Chiropractic care to all who came, and they came from far and wide!

My time was overwhelmingly memorable and full of cherished moments.  It made me appreciate that language barriers can be easily overcome, so long as you are focussed and present with whomever comes before you.  The time was marked by a distinct lack of materialism where I often received nothing more than a smile or a hug, others brought cool water, some were kind enough to bring refreshing local (tropical to us!) fruit or even invite us to family meals.

It was a truly heartening time, a stark reminder that life can be so simple, if we just let it.

Myself with Dr Matthew Horkey DC and Sadra, the Acupuncturist, leader of the Ashram and also the figurehead of his nearby mountain village - Tenganan (not to mention a trustee of the Sarvodaya International Trust whose Honour Panel of Eminent Counsellors include Nobel Laureates His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Rt. Rev. Desmond Tutu. - something I only found out whilst writing this page!)

Adjusting one of the attendees of the Ashram, who would subsequently be seen by Sadra for Acupuncture (5 Elements)

Adjusting a patient on the portable table - note the use of newspaper as face paper - we had to be creative!

With Dr Matt, Dharsa, Putra and Dharma in traditional celebratory outfits (it was New Years Day) - children from families of deprived local mountain villages living and being taught at the Ashram.

(yes, that is rice on my forehead!)

A picture from our final evening with everyone, the night before the children had to return to school classes the next morning!
